Cooktop Fail
WHAT: Random   |   WHEN: January 26, 2010

The good news?  The gas cooktop was installed today.  The bad news?  I scorched one of our Calphalon One pots on my first attempt at using said cooktop.  It's too soon to call this my fault, but my case doesn't look good.  I wanted to test out the awesomeness of cooking with gas, so I told Kylie I was just going to run a little test case by boiling some water.  That was around 9:05pm this evening.

[cut to 10:16pm]

Kylie:  (walking into kitchen) "Why is this still boiling?"

Me:  (sitting in my photography room at the computer) "What'd you say, honey?"

Voice in my head: Uh-ohhhh... tell me I didn't forget about the water I started to boil an hour ago.  TELL ME I didn't forget about the water I started to boil an hour ago?!.... I forgot.  Quick, come up with an awesome excuse to deflect the blame.

Me: (walking the walk of shame into the kitchen)  "Oops.  I think I forgot."

Voice in my head: Really?  "I think I forgot?"  Is that the best you could come up with?  You're hopeless.

---------

So now I'm in search and rescue mode.  I'm looking for and taking recommendations for trying to save our [awesome wedding gift] pot.  I've got some Bar Keepers Friend stuff I'm gonna give a try, but I'm open to other ideas if you've got 'em.

Slooow Progress
WHAT: Personal   |   WHEN: January 25, 2010
I think remodeling has recently been promoted to the same category of things like paying taxes, pulling weeds, and sticking a pitchfork in your eye.  This is my first go-around with doing significant room updates, and to say it hasn't gone smoothly is like saying Brett Farve is probably a little bummed he threw that last pass yesterday against New Orleans... a bit of an understatement.

The living room is coming along nicely and is basically done minus a new chair, some canvas artwork, and a little accessorizing.  Here's a quick image of the updated fireplace brick and mantel.  We were thinking about replacing the brick and going with something a little more modern but decided to just paint it and the wall it's on a medium warm taupe-gray, and we had the mantle sanded and stained darker.  I love the 50" canvas image from our honeymoon stop in Venice, but may need to either make it a black and white or change the print to another image that doesn't have such a bold orangish color in it.  Your thoughts?

And while out at Pier 1 the other day, we stumbled on this little button pillow gem on the clearance rack.  We thought it was fun and had the hard to find color combination (reds, warm gray, sand, slate and steel blue, etc.) we're trying to use to tie the photography gallery room to the adjacent updated living room.  I think it looks pretty fun in the red leather chairs in the gallery room.

I hope to post new kitchen images soon when we get the appliances in and the tile backsplash installed.  The tile work is worthy of an entire post of it's own considering we're going on day 4 of a tile job that was quoted as only taking a day to complete.  In fact, the words backsplash, tile & kitchen and the phrase of the week, "Uhhh, sir, we've got a little problem" have become my new hot buttons.  Say any of of them, and I'm likely to stuff your ears with grout.

One Year Ago Today
WHAT: Personal   |   WHEN: January 24, 2010

Hard to believe it's already been a year since Kylie and I said we do.  It's been an incredible year, and I just want to say thank you, Kylie, for your grace, your patience, your friendship, your beauty, your kindness, and your love.  I can't wait to see what's next for us.  I love you today... and always.

Debi {Maternity}
WHAT: Maternity, Portraits   |   WHEN: January 24, 2010
My friend's Debi & Francis are preparing to welcome home their first little one in just a couple days.  At eight and half months pregnant, Debi looks pretty fantastic.  I mean, when we showed up at their house to create a few images of her belly, I was expecting Debi to look, well, more pregnant.  She's always been physically fit, but if I didn't see her little bump, I'd never guess she was pregnant.  Yes, she looks that amazing.

Here's just a couple from our quick session.

Debi & Francis have 3 Weimaraners, and after a little coaxing, we got the 2 youngest ones to jump in and break in the crib a bit for the baby.

Remodeling is Scary
WHAT: Random   |   WHEN: January 23, 2010
We're about 3/4 through the kitchen and living room update, and while things haven't gone exactly as planned (or budgeted), the end is in sight.  At one point, it was a little comical how we had to go out the garage, through the backyard and through the master bedroom door to get from one side of the house to the other.  I'm sure the neighbors were close to calling 911 every time they saw someone repeatedly walkin' around the house after midnight.  Here's a couple images I thought were interesting.

This first one was through a small hole in the plastic tarp covering one of the entrances to the kitchen.  Almost looks like you're seeing the kitchen with the cabinets primed through my eyeball.  Kinda creepy, actually.  BTW, that one handle on the fake drawer you see there... what a beat down it was to get that thing out because the sink drops down right behind it, and there's only about an inch and a half gap to get to the screws on the backside.  I'd like to meet the genius that thought that was good design.

The side of the refrigerator was covered with Christmas & holiday cards, and even though it was also covered with plastic, there were a couple spots where I could see some friendly faces poking through.  Here's Jen Weintraub's kiddos.

And here's Karen Beyer's little munchkins.  Don't let the plastic fool you... both Jen and Karen's kids are ridiculously cute.. the plastic tarp makes them look like they're in a movie poster for the Shining Part II, though.

Stay tuned for pictures of the final product.
